Songs that Tell Stories

A New Folk Musical Collective

Steve Harrison and Friends are a musical collective, featuring a variety of instrumentalists with various styles and influences behind them as they create new Folk music in Acton. We came together to create some lovely music that we hope you’ll love to hear and, over lockdown, have been pretty prolific indeed! Steve Harrison is the ringleader, having brought the Friends together under one banner, to create music inspired by all manner of topics and genres. Our songs that tell stories incorporate Jazz, Folk, Latin and Indie influences, to create what we hope will be a new experience for your ears. Have a listen and let us know what you think!

Recorded under the name of Steve Harrison Band, this album represents Steve’s first foray into recorded music. The album, lyrically, is inspired by a trip to Hungary and acts as a launchpad for what Steve Harrison and Friends would eventually become.

Village Green (2018)

Our first album recorded at Slipway Studio, Village Green represents an exploration both of classic, rural village life and the feudalism of the past that preceded and informed that way of life. It is historically-influenced and is the album where Steve Harrison and Friends came to life on record!

W3 (2018)

Slipway Studios Hampton

This album is concerned with home and with the typical day-to-day life one lives in London. It is so named for the postcode where Steve lives and the songs explore life through his eyes. While not overtly autobiographical, a bit of biography certainly sneaks through here and there!

Make Believe (2019)

Slipway Studios Hampton

This album was an opportunity for us to really expand our musical repertoire and experiment a bit more with songs that tell stories. We experimented with new harmonies, styles and instruments, with Lexie joining our group and taking over lead vocal duties for this album as a whole.

Iron Age Eyes (2022)

Inspired by Steve’s time spent in Germany, this album deals with East Germany before the breaking down of the Berlin Wall and is influenced by the small acts of resistance that an every-day person might have carried out in opposition to an oppressive Communist regime.

Our Influences

History

Having spent his working years as a teacher, History is, naturally, a huge influence on Steve’s songwriting process. History relates to us all – it’s our past, individually and together. History means something different to everyone.

Germany

With several years spent living in Germany, Steve couldn’t help but be influenced by the change in his surroundings, physically and culturally. This experience has directly influenced many of the songs on Village Green and Iron Age Eyes in particular.

Home

Village Green and, especially, W3 are heavily influenced by the concept of Home. W3 is Steve’s home postcode and Village Green deals with the themes of rural village life, as well as the less idyllic underbelly that frequently lurks beneath it.
